This struck me because as iam back home, and iam watching News, there is an issue of accident in which a bus has fall down into a river and a lot of people have been killed and several other’s injured.

so, i guess i must make an advice on careful driving. Honestly, speed thrills!!

When you have a good car and a good road, there is nothing more thrilling than pressing your leg on the gas pedal.

But this is has also lead to a number of accident cases and most of the time the injured or casualities are people who are not involved in any of this.

One of the most common dilemma, medical students and practitioners face across the globe is over the ethics of abortion. while some say that practicing medical termination of pregnancy, within the legal parameter’s are justifiable, there are a group who advocate that the entire act of elimination of a fetus to be “satanic’

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo, resulting in or caused by its death. An abortion can occur spontaneously due to complication during pregnancy or can be induced, in humans and other species. In the context of human pregnancies, an abortion induced to preserve the health of the gravida (pregnant female) is termed a therapeutic abortion, while an abortion induced for any other reason is termed an elective abortion. The term abortion most commonly refers to the induced abortion of a human pregnancy, while spontaneous abortions are usually termed miscarraiges.

The abortion, I’m referring to here is the Therapeutic abortion or induced abortion or medical termination of pregnancy.

before i explain the pro’s and cones of  this, i want to specify the explanation of MTP and why is it applied in the first place.

in short, below is the extract mentioning, When pregnancies may be terminated by registered medical practitioners –

(1)               Notwithstanding anything contained in the Indian Penal Code (45 of 1860), a registered medical practitioner shall not be guilty of any offence under that Code or under any other law for the time being in force, if any pregnancy is terminated by him in accordance with the provisions of this Act.

(2)               Subject to the provisions of sub-section (4), a pregnancy may be terminated by a registered medical practitioner, –

(a)                Where the length of the pregnancy does not exceed twelve weeks if such medical practitioner is, or

(b)               Where the length of the pregnancy exceeds twelve weeks but does not exceed twenty weeks, if not less than two registered medical practitioner are,

of opinion, formed in good faith, that –

(i)               the continuance of the pregnancy would involve a risk to the life of the pregnant woman or of grave injury to her physical or mental health; or

(ii)       there is a substantial risk that if the child were born, it would suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities to be seriously handicapped.

Explanation 1 – Where any pregnancy is alleged by the pregnant woman to have been caused by rape, the anguish caused by such pregnancy shall be presumed to constitute a grave injury to the mental health of the pregnant woman.

Explanation 2 – Where any pregnancy occurs as a result of failure of any device or method used by any married woman or her husband for the purpose of limiting the number of children, the anguish caused by such unwanted pregnancy may be resumed to constitute a grave injury to the mental health of the pregnant woman.

(3)               In determining whether the continuance of a pregnancy would involve such risk of injury to the health as is mentioned in sub-section (2), account may be taken of the pregnant women’s actual or reasonable foreseeable environment.

(4)               (a)        No pregnancy of a woman, who has not attained the age of eighteen years, or, who, having attained the age of eighteen years, is a lunatic, shall be terminated except with the consent in writing of her guardian.

(b)        Save as otherwise provided in clause (a), no pregnancy shall be terminated except with the consent of the pregnant woman.

so, how is it done?

An abortion can be done in many ways.

1. surgical abortions

2. non-surgical abortions.

A pregnancy can be intentionally aborted in many ways. The manner selected depends chiefly upon the gestational age of the embryo or fetus, which increases in size as it ages.

so, lets come to the main issue of the topic?? Is it justified??

Again, as i started my article, i said about the dilemma it causes. On one side you stand with the responsiblity to do what is good on behalf of your patient and on other side certain morals, you believe in.

As far as I’m concerned, i would prefer abortion if it is done according to the clauses mentioned according to the clauses mentioned in the MTP act of Indian Government, but i dont justify when it is done in

1. Sex-selective abortion and female infanticide

2. unsafe abortion

A clinician actually lives in a world of dual entente.

in one part of the gynecology ward, he has to attend to a delivery and see a joy face of a life being born and on another side of the hospital he has to attend a D&C to abort a foetus.

There are debates on the hypothesis of chance for breast cancer or fetal pain for fetus while abortion.

some of the other debates involved are

  • Are embryos, zygotes and fetuses “persons” worthy of legal protections?
  • Should the potential to be a person give embryos, zygotes and fetuses a right to life?
  • Does a fetus gain rights as it gets closer to birth?
  • Does a woman have an absolute right to determine what happens to her body?
  • Is abortion acceptable in cases of rape, incest, contraception failure?
  • Is abortion acceptable in cases where the foetus is deformed?
  • Is abortion acceptable in cases where if the pregnancy were to continue, it would pose a direct threat to the life of the mother?

In many of the cases it would be hard to reach a conclusion because most of them are like two sides of a coin. you cant determine the right one. Personally, it would be appreciable if the parents of an fetus decide whether he should be born or not.

Parenting, is a huge responsibility and not a burden. Both the husband and wife have to make contribution. As far as the important issues are concerned, i believe that at most of the places in the world, there are still on going foeticides because the fetus is female.

Amniocentesis, and other advanced techniques are largely misused. A technology that was developed so that the actual status and health of a developing fetus be understood is largely used for sex determination. In most of the developed world, there is no difference, whether the chld is a girl or boy. But the same is not the condition on other parts of the world.

In 1991, the male-to-female sex ratio in India was skewed from its biological norm of 105 to 100, to an average of 108 to 100. Researchers have asserted that between 1985 and 2005 as many as 10 million female fetuses may have been selectively aborted. The Indian government passed an official ban of pre-natal sex screening in 1994 and moved to pass a complete ban of sex-selective abortion in 2002.

The main reason for the preferences of male child in India, include social conditions like Dowry, which is the amount paid by a brides family to the groom as a ‘compensation’. Also, there are other aspect like economy and family earning.

This is a major issue in India. But today at most of the places the scenario is changing. Better education and living standard as well as the upliftment of women from the corridors of home, to be working community have improved the sex ratio.

Another major area of concern is the unsafe abortion. Sometimes, due to fear of public exposure of sexual status, some women resort to unsafe methods of abortion. These include certain practices, which are largely unhygenic, certain abortificant, which are potent toxins etc.

The world health org (WHO) defines an unsafe abortion as being “a procedure … carried out by persons lacking the necessary skills or in an environment that does not conform to minimal medical standards, or both.” Unsafe abortions are sometimes known colloquially as “back-alley” abortions. This can include a person without medical training, a professional health provider operating in sub-standard conditions, or the woman herself

Unsafe abortion remains a concern today due to the higher incidence and severity of its associated complications, such as incomplete abortion, sepsis, hemorrhage, and damage to internal organs. WHO estimates that 19 million unsafe abortions occur around the world annually and that 68,000 of these result in the woman’s death.

Personally, it would be for me to conclude it this way. Every life is precious. We all have our role to play in this world. In a way, we all are linked to each other. It is the choices we make that makes us  special.

Please consult a doctor in need of expert opinion on the requirement of abortion. There are a lot of ways to avoid unwanted pregnancies. It is easier to apply any of them, rather than conceiving and aborting a fetus. In other conditions such as a medical condition that may be harmful for the mother, it would be left for the family to make a choice. i also believe that the law  must be made stronger so as to prevent incidents such as rape and domestic violences. Stronger punishments must be implied on people who break the rules of the society. Rape or any domestic violence, foeticide, etc cannot be tolerated in society. People with sexually transmitted disease must never hide it  from their partner and seek medical care immediately. Being honest with your partner is the best way to  express your love for them.

Generally, there are a lot of reasons involved that may cause cardiac diseases in a person. And cardiac diseases doesn’t mean only coronary heart disease. the are a variety of diseases that affect the heart which include

1.congenital heart disease

2.heart attack

3.CAD

4.irregular cardiac rhythm

and many more

But there are certain measures that a common man can apply to his daily routine inorder to reduce the risk factors of getting cardiac diseases.

They include

  • Regular exercises – jogging, swimming, cycling
  • Increase the amount of fibre food in diet
  • decrease the amount of oily food
  • Cut short on that fried items
  • No to obesity
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Control diabetes
  • Decrease the fat in your body
  • Stay away from stress, control your blood pressure
  • follow your medications in time
  • do regular health check up
  • regular diet
  • food and sleep at regular interval
  • people with family history for cardiac diseases, must take additional care
  • decrease amount of salt intake
  • increase water intake

These are some of the important measures you can follow to protect your heart.

Always remember prevention is better than cure. So, know what your heart says, listen to it.

This article is inspired from what i read from a mail forwarded to me from a medical journal. i found it to be quite interesting and i hope that it would be of any help for you.

i guess you have heard the saying GREEN IS THE NEW ME.

well, it is the green concept iam talking to. lets try make the world a greener planet.

its not expensive and as iam myself planning to give it a try, i guess i would love you also to give it a try.

so, how can we cut down the exposure to harmful chemicals and other household risks.

1.Get house dust under control

most of us have some sort of allergy or atleast aversion towards dust.

Dust allergy, is one of the common allergy dealt in clinical pracitice.  It also contains more hazardous chemicals than you might think, including lead, fire retardants, pesticides, and other chemicals.

some of the common solutions include replacing most of the carpets or atleast making sure that they are vaccumed from time to time. They are the largest collectors of dust at any homes. Vacuum frequently — meticulously getting into corners, along the floorboards, and moving furniture to get those dust bunnies.Vacuum at least two times each week. Clean the vacuum bag and filter every time, so dust isn’t spewed back into the air.

2.Throw that nicotine out.

The most prone people for asthma are actually not the cigarette smoker but the children in their family.

childhood is the stage when people develop most of the vulnerable diseases with retarted immunity and most of the asthma patients have a history of being passive smokers.

it saves a lot of money and also at the same time protects the health of an entire family. future expenses on health related problems can also be reduced if you quit smoking.

3. Get your home tested.

This is something we usually dont do.

but it is adviced to get the home tested for the amount of toxic substances inside, which include the amount of lead in the paint or the CFC that your air conditioner or refrigerator is pumping out every minute.

Do get the pollution control test  for your vehicle in time. it helps to clean the entire enviornment as well.

4. Ditch pesticides.

try to avoid the number of pesticides yuo apply to your lawn and garden. Rely mostly on manure and other natural resources. if you keep the dishes clean, prevent any leakages in your pipes and seal any open cracks, to an extend you can control the pests like cockroaches. wash the dishes at time, keep your kitchen organised. make sure you timely evacute the waste materials and also keep your bathroom and toilets clean.

if there are weeds in your garden , try this better thing. remove it manually.

it saves money and also burns that extra on your body.

5. Be careful with plastic bottles and canned foods.

The safety of bisphenol A, a chemical found in polycarbonate plastics, is still being debated. These plastics are used in some water bottles and baby bottles.

Bisphenol A is also used in epoxy resins that line metal products like canned foods. They are found to have effects on the brain, prostate gland, and behavior in fetuses, infants, and children. And one study found that adults with high levels of BPA in their urine were more likely to have a history of heart disease or diabetes, compared to people with low levels of BPA.

What can you do to limit exposure to BPA?

1. Look for safer water or baby bottles — either tempered glass bottles or plastic bottles made of cloudy plastics like polyethelene or polypropylene (recycling symbols 1, 2 or 5) are generally safe. Avoid those marked with a “7” or “PC.”

2.Don’t microwave plastic food containers. Heat can break down plastic fibers.

3.Don’t microwave with cling wraps. Put food in a glass or ceramic dish and then cover with waxed paper or paper towels.

4.Eat fewer canned foods. Use glass and ceramic containers to store or microwave foods.

    6.use filtered water to drink

    when you leave out for a journey, try to take water with you. this is the safest thing you can assure that your water is not contaminated.

    Most of the bottled samples of water are merely purchased because we dont have another option in front of us.

    To an extend use water bottled in recyclable can’s and make sure to deposit back to the trash can.

    7. Temper the Teflon.

    If you’ve got pots and pans with Teflon coating — or other nonstick cookware – make sure you use them wisely. Perfluorinated (PFCs) chemicals are used to make these nonstick coatings, and the chemicals can accumulate in the body. The EPA lists PFOA (one type of PFCs used in Teflon) as a “likely human carcinogen,” although there’s no evidence that Teflon-coated pans cause cancer.

    DuPont and other companies have agreed, in response to government pressure, to eliminate use of PFOA by 2015. In the meantime, you can switch to other cookware now: stainless steel, anodized aluminum, copper-coated pans, cast iron, or enamel-coated iron. Silicone baking molds are also safe to use.

    If you can’t do without your nonstick cookware – or if it’s too expensive to replace right away — then follow safe cooking practices. Don’t preheat pans on high, and use the lowest temperature you can to cook food.

    Two other places you’ll find PFCs – in grease-resistant food packaging and as a stain-protection treatment. Reducing greasy packaged foods and fast foods in your diet (like microwave popcorn, French fries, and pizza) not only lowers your exposure, it’s also good for your heart.

    8.Wash your hands regularly

    if there is anything at your home that your vaccum cleaner dont suck, your toddler will get it!!

    so, make sure that you wash your hands regularly after getting back home from work, before and after food.

    Regular soap wash and also cleaning your back of hands, between fingers and around the nail buds for a suffiecient time regularly.

    Advice the visitors at your house also to do the same.

    9. Use non-toxic cleaning products.

    “If you’ve ever mopped with ammonia, you know how your lungs constrict,”

    The conventional cleaning supplies under your sink — with their “warning” and “poison” labels — contain a potent mix of chemicals.

    Look for “green” cleaners that don’t contain chlorine or ammonia. Choose ones that say “petroleum-free,” “biodegradable,” or “phosphate-free.”  Use vinegar instead of bleach, baking soda to scrub your tiles, and hydrogen peroxide to remove stains. Need a window cleaner? Try diluted lemon juice or vinegar.

    10. Eat organic, eat healthy.

    When you eat organic food, you ingest fewer pesticides. You’re also helping protect the environment.

    More pluses: Research shows that some organic food is more nutritious – organic fruits and vegetables have 25% higher levels of many nutrients than conventional produce.

    However, organic produce can be 20% more expensive than conventional. Organic meats and dairy products might be three times the cost of conventional items.

    Cut the cost of eating organic foods by:

    1.Buying in-season produce, which is plentiful and often cheaper at your local farmer’s market.

    2.Selectively buy the produce that absorbs the most pesticide if not organic — like berries, which soak up more pesticides than other fruit. You don’t really need organic bananas, since they’re protected by a peel.

    3.Buy organic for the foods you eat most often.

      If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, aim for good health in the kitchen. The most important thing to notice while breast feeding are that you are completely aware of the quality of the food you take. because the same thing is to be the suppliment of another life as as well.

      Have you ever wondered what is it that you need the most for a living.?? lot of answers may pop up, air, oxygen, girlfriend, money etc etc but i honestly feel that all of us are actually in the pursuit of happiness. i write because that keeps me happy. i do things that keeps me moving.

      SO ARE YOU REALLY HAPPY?

      to know the real answer, just have a look at your routine life. wake up in the morning with a hell lot of problems, pending works, meetings or if you are a student, well, i know how it feels because i just finished a part of my education and remember the stress you face getting up, the longing for five more happy minutes in the comfort of bed, while the alarm reminding you of the daily things you have to do. missing breakfast, scolding you spouse because food was not ready. the missing socks..why is my shoe like this, where is the key of my car!!!! we all are so used to a stressful life that we cant deny its existence.

      i dont need to tell you to be rational because i know you are. just like you, im also a very lazy person most of my life. but has it helped me. well, not at all.

      so, lets try to work out a formula to have a healthy lifestyle.

      it is a hidden fact that a large chunk of our annual income goes for medical treatment and a large part of it comes because people are negligent of their health.

      oops, iam on the other side!! i mean iam a doctor , but honestly like everyone in my field  dedicated  to make your life happy, iam also interested in helping you. There is a widely popular notion that doctors are actually praying for a ‘diseased community”. well, as far as i have known and seen, there are a large number of doctors who have dedicated their life for the welfare of a society as such. i was part of a pain and palliative care program once and i know how important it is for the civilians and medical professionals to join together to help people who are suffering.

      ok, enough of this lecture, let me pull you straight into the things we can apply so as to lead a healthy life.

      1. THINK GOOD, DO GOOD STAND

      why is this important. knowingly or unknowingly,  we are by instinct a group of people specialised in blaming the other. Maybe you dont do it, but i have done it.  so i know!!

      being calm and composed to situations has its own advantages. when we get angry and start removing them on others, a large part of our self  is getting suffocated with it. instead when we smile and take things with a positive attitute perhaps things may turn out to be even better. we become positive and there is a different energy that surrounds us. i have noticed this too in my daily life. As a doctor, i know what my patient expects from me, so instead if i approach him with a “i dont care”  attitude, however strong be my medicine, the required effect may never be delivered.The same happens at all the workplaces. we are either the producers or the consumers. in both places we are also customers too. so we need to make sure that we be pleasant and presentable to whoever we approach or is approached

      so, remember to be POSITIVE

      2.RESPECT TIME

      some say that they don’t have enough time, but remember we all have the same time. All that matters is how we use them.

      There is a saying of kabir Das, “kal kare so aaj kal, aaj kare so ab, pal mein pralay hoyege bahuri karega kab” this is something iread when i was a kid, in my hindi text book. so yes, it means that do it now, whatever you are planning to do tomorrow. none of us can predict what happens tomorrow.

      so never leave anything pending.

      live hard and party hard.ie, you work well, you deserve the result for it. so, live the life with enjoyment

      EARLY TO BED AND EARLY TO RISE
      MAKES A PERSON HEALTHY,  WEALTHY AND WISE..

      find enough times for relaxation, regular exercises.

      have a proper time plan for tomorrow.

      3.Eat to live, dont live to eat

      most of the common cases we come across in hospitals are to deal with obesity, cholesterol, diabetes etc. most of the life style diseases are proportional to the food habits and unhyegenic lifestyles of fast and junk foods. try to avoid as much as fast foods as possible. eat healthy food, drink plenty of water.

      4.regular exercise

      this is very important for every person. some say that they are taking rest now , because they are ‘resting” after resting for the last few hours.

      make a move guys.

      do some exercises, join for some martial arts, or go for a salsa. just burn that extra from your body.

      Today you may not realize its worth, but a few years as all the diseases start gripping you one by one, you may realize that its too late now.

      do some jogging or cycling everyday. Go to the house two blocks away in a walk.

      ofcourse, you may have a mercedes, but still show them that you also have the latest nike !!!

      5.be stress free

      again iam going to hit with the bad joke!!

      remember the scene in dark knight, in which The joker asks “why so serious son” “lemme put a smile onto that face”

      today, most of the people i meet i have a hidden urge to say that and honestly do that. because, you see small kids going to schools in buses, they are walking with the seriousness as if they are going to attend the cardiac surgery,

      laugh and laugh!! it really helps.

      its very important that you atleast make one true friend before you die and also that you have a mobile connection from which you have the least call rate to his number and again make sure that this one friend, make you laugh in such a way that even when you are going to die, you can just tell everyone, see you all soon at heaven!!!

      being stress free  itself can be a booster for confidence. if you dont understand what i mean, be brave enough to do something you were very afraid of without any fear!!(i dont mean to do something antisocial)

      learn to enjoy each moment as it comes, kya patha kal ho na ho..for all my Indian readers, you know where i copied that one. but friends, that means, NJOY

      6.give up smoking and alcohol

      how many times have you decided that this is the last puff and last peg?

      well, this is a gradual process, may be , just compare all the possible positive things that may come to your life, the life of all that matters you and decide if its worth it!yes, it is. so give it up..

      okay, i hear that.DO PEOPLE AT MEDICAL FIELD AVOID THEM COMPLETELY??

      well, honestly, there are people who use it. Again whom do you think is most concerned about your health.?? dont worry, its not me. its your subconscious mind that keeps things in the ‘i’ perspective!!so, if you are not able to control any addictions that may take over you, you may actually loose your ground one day.

      7.do regular health check up

      There are two thoughts that may come. if i dont do this, i may live my life more peacefully. now that i find out, i have a problem, i will have long waiting on appointments, regular sugar tests, lipid profile, hb count..isnt all such a sheer waste of money.

      well, i would still advice you to keep those thoughts away and get a regular health check up every once in a year or so.

      keep your sugar levels and cholestrol etc regularly checked

      for women, once in a month do regular self examination of breast.(These parts will be discussed in the further articles to come)

      why do  i stress on doing them?? have you ever wondered how meticulously a formula one team performs to be the best. the is a dedicated team of engineers who track and monitor every single feed of information they get on the performance and assess them so that it run so smoothly. in a similiar way, our engine also needs regular update and check up. or else you may find the engine complaint right on the day of the race or on the race. i hope you get the gravity.

      so, nothing stays as such for ever. life is a blend of good and bad things.

      what makes us happy when we hear it on bad times, and the same that makes us sad, when we hear it on happy times?? the answer is “this time will move on”
