over the past few years, there has been a rapid growth in the number of social networking sites and many of them are immensely popular and the fact that you are in my page means you are also probably available in one or more of the various social networks like Orkut, myspace, facebook etc

But the above statement, i found from a tweet from  Sara Haider (Pandemona), made me think about the same. Most of us would agree with doing the same. so, the rather bigger question is why is twitter so popular??

Some of the reason’s include that it is

Due to all these reason’s twitter is actually very fast.

Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide. It is sometimes described as “SMS of the Internet. The use of Twitter’s application programming interface for sending and receiving text messages by other applications often eclipses direct use of Twitter.

What we have to do is deliver to people the best and freshest most relevant information possible. We think of Twitter as it’s not a social network, but it’s an information network. It tells people what they care about as it is happening in the world.

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Since late 2009, users can follow lists of authors instead of following individual authors. All users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications

Apart from the convenience of keeping our writing short, it also provides an excuse for having poor grammar and abbreviations.

It empasises on providing a feel you have never had before. Unlike the orkut or any other social servicing websites, twitter act more like a personal module where celebrities can interact their voices without being disturbed. You can follow them and get access to most of the things you would have never heard from them. i personally use twitter to read medical journal’s from sites such as Mayo clinic, certain organization’s i volunteer such as the Red cross. But twitter also helps me to get updates on my favorite cricketers, film stars(including SRK, sonam kapoor, lizaraniray…) or listen to philosophy from Paulo coelho or Dalailama, Articles from Paul krugman, mashable, timoriely to Bill gates or watch detail’s of Astronauts from Nasa.

Having a lot of friend’s make you feel that you are popular.

The best advantage however i found about twitter is the fact that it indirectly act as a medium for backdoor marketing.

Having good friend’s are always helpful in the twitter world.

“Google before you tweet” is the new “think before you speak”

so, i find surrounded by lot of people who seem to know everything about everything. Some of the best things i have had from my recent twitter experience (ofcourse, i do tweet nowadays) is that i been able to interact personally with some of the great people in the field of medicine, read their articles even before they reach my college library and recieve updates from them. I follow some of the pioneer’s in medicine and i feel i myself have learned a lot from them, so before i interact with them, i need to be completely sure about my knowledge on that subject. or again, i was recently tweeting with a very beautiful lady about Justin Beiber and to this minute i really dont care/know who JB is, but i did google and find all about him to help me have an hour of safe conversation!!!(sorry about that, but it is true)

Other than that, twitter is an important platform to spread word about your works.

Also, having a lot of friend’s is very assuring and helpful.

so, what are you waiting for, if you are not there in twitter, check the follow me sign on the right side of this page and join me at twitter.
